White Elephant Gift Exchange Generator

Draw a random turn order for a White Elephant or Yankee Swap, then use the board to track who is holding each gift, how many times each gift has been stolen, and whose turn it is after a theft. Everything runs on one device, with nothing to sign up for.

A gift becomes frozen after it reaches the selected number of steals.

White elephant works differently from Secret Santa

In Secret Santa, each person is assigned another person to buy for. In white elephant nobody is assigned anyone. Everyone brings one wrapped gift, the gifts go in a pile, and the only thing that needs randomizing is the order people take their turn.

If you want people assigned to buy gifts for one another, the Secret Santa Generator handles the assignments privately on one device, while the Gift Exchange Generator shows the complete assignment list to the organiser.

How the game runs

  1. Everyone brings one wrapped gift and puts it in the pile.
  2. Turn order is drawn at random.
  3. Player 1 takes a gift from the pile and opens it.
  4. Every player after that chooses: open a new gift from the pile, or steal one that has already been opened.
  5. If your gift is stolen, you go again immediately — open a new one or steal from someone else.
  6. The game ends when every gift has been opened and everyone holds one.

The rule that keeps it moving

Without a limit, a popular gift can bounce around the room repeatedly. The generator lets you freeze a gift after it has been stolen an agreed number of times. Three is the default choice, but you can set the limit to one, two, three, or no limit.

You can also turn on no immediate steal-back. When this rule is enabled, someone whose gift was just stolen cannot immediately take that same gift back. They can steal another eligible gift or open a new one. Both rules are configurable because groups can use different house rules.

Can the game get stuck?

No. The player whose turn it is does not hold a gift at that moment — they have either not played yet or their gift has just been stolen. That means at least one gift is still wrapped, so open a new gift remains available.

With a finite steal limit, the game also has a finite number of possible steals. Every steal uses one of those allowed steals, while every opening adds one more opened gift. Eventually all gifts are opened and every player has one.

Running it well

  • Agree the budget and the steal limit before you start, not after the first good gift appears.
  • Keep the gifts unlabelled. Half the game is not knowing whose gift you are opening.
  • Consider a final swap for player 1 if your group uses that house rule. Player 1 opens the first gift before anyone has a chance to steal, so some groups give them an optional final choice.
  • One person runs the board. Passing a phone around works, but a single scorekeeper can be faster once stealing starts.

Frequently asked questions

What is a white elephant gift exchange?

A party game where everyone brings one wrapped gift and takes turns either opening a gift from the pile or stealing one already opened. It is also called a Yankee Swap or, in some groups, Dirty Santa. Nobody is assigned a person to buy for.

What happens when someone steals my gift?

You take another turn immediately. You can open a new gift or steal an eligible gift from someone else. If no immediate steal-back is enabled, you cannot take back the same gift that was just stolen from you.

How many times can one gift be stolen?

It depends on the rule you choose. The generator defaults to three steals, but you can set the limit to one, two, three, or no limit. Once a gift reaches its limit, it is frozen and cannot be stolen again.

How many people do I need?

The generator accepts at least three players and up to 40. Every player brings exactly one gift, so the number of gifts matches the number of players.
