PSI to Bar Converter

Convert pounds per square inch to bar. One psi is 0.0689476 bar, so divide your psi figure by 14.5037738 to get bar. Enter any value below, or use the table for common tyre and compressor pressures. For other pressure units, use the Pressure Conversion Calculator.

Common conversions

How to convert psi to bar

bar = psi ÷ 14.5037738
bar = psi × 0.0689476

Both forms give the same answer. Dividing by 14.5 is easier in your head: a 32 psi tyre is roughly 32 ÷ 14.5, a little over 2.2 bar. The exact figure is 2.2063 bar.

To convert in the opposite direction, use the Bar to PSI Converter. For conversions involving kPa, MPa, atm, mmHg or other pressure units, use the Pressure Conversion Calculator.

Worked examples

  • 32 psi to bar: 32 ÷ 14.5037738 = 2.2063 bar

Typical pressures in psi and bar

  • Car tyres: 30–35 psi, about 2.1–2.4 bar.
  • Bicycle road tyres: 80–130 psi, about 5.5–9 bar.
  • Home air compressors: 120–150 psi, about 8.3–10.3 bar.
  • Espresso extraction: around 130 psi, about 9 bar.

Why the conversion factor isn't round

Bar is metric and psi is based on pounds and inches, so the conversion factor isn't a simple power of ten. A bar is exactly 100,000 pascals; a psi is 6,894.757293... pascals. Dividing one by the other gives 14.5037738..., whose decimal expansion does not terminate, so displayed psi-to-bar results are rounded.

Frequently asked questions

What is 32 psi in bar?

32 psi is 2.2063 bar. It's a common car tyre pressure, so 2.2 bar is the usual figure to set on a gauge marked in bar.

What is 120 psi in bar?

120 psi is 8.2737 bar. That's within the pressure range used by many home air compressors.

What is 125 psi in bar?

125 psi is 8.6184 bar.

What is 45 psi in bar?

45 psi is 3.1026 bar — around the pressure of a typical mains water supply, and a common figure for larger van and light truck tyres.

Is 1 bar exactly 14.5 psi?

Not exactly — it's 14.5037738 psi. For tyres, 14.5 is close enough at normal pressures. For a more precise conversion, use the Bar to PSI Converter.
