How to convert meters to feet and inches
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm, which makes one meter exactly 39.3700787… inches. Multiply the meters by that to get the total inches, then split the total: every 12 inches is a foot, and the rest is the inches.
Total inches = meters × 100 ÷ 2.54Feet = whole part of (total inches ÷ 12)Inches = the remainder For 1.75 m:
- 1.75 × 100 ÷ 2.54 = 68.8976... inches
- 68.8976... ÷ 12 = 5 feet, with 8.8976... inches left over
- So 1.75 m is 5 ft 8.9 in, or 5 ft 9 in rounded
Feet and inches, or decimal feet?
Divide 1.75 by 0.3048 and you get 5.74 feet. That’s the same height written a different way: decimal feet, where what follows the point is a fraction of a foot rather than a count of inches. Our meters to feet converter gives that form.
Which one you want depends on what you’re doing with it. Decimal feet are easier to put into a calculation — you can add and multiply them like any other number, which is why surveying, engineering and construction drawings often use them. Feet and inches are how heights are spoken, written on forms and printed on charts.
Converting between the two is the last step of the method above: take the fractional part of the decimal feet and multiply it by 12. For example, 5.74 feet is about 5 ft 8.9 in.

Why 5 ft 12 in never appears
Rounding the inches on their own can push them up to 12, but 12 inches should be carried into the feet. For example, 1.828 m is about 5 ft 11.97 in. Rounded to one decimal place, that would be 5 ft 12.0 in. Instead, the extra 12 inches becomes another foot, giving 6 ft 0 in. This converter handles that carry automatically.
Why the conversion is exact
The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, so the underlying conversion between meters and feet and inches uses an exact conversion factor. For example, 5 ft 9 in is exactly 1.7526 m.
Results such as 1.75 m to feet and inches are rounded for display. This converter keeps the calculation as an exact fraction internally and rounds only the displayed result.
