How the days left are counted
The count runs from tomorrow to 31 December. Today is not included, so on 30 December the answer is 1 and on 31 December it is 0 — today being the last day rather than one of the days left.
That is worth stating because the other convention is equally defensible. Counting today as a remaining day gives an answer one higher throughout the year. Neither is wrong; they answer slightly different questions, and a calculator that doesn’t say which one it uses leaves you to guess.
Why the number can differ from another site
Three things can make two “days left in the year” answers differ, and all three are about definitions rather than arithmetic.
- Whether today counts. The commonest cause of an off-by-one, as above.
- Which day it is where you are. This page uses your device’s local date. A site that calculates on its own server can be a day ahead or behind for anyone in a different time zone — noticeable around New Year, when being a day out is the whole question.
- Leap years. A leap year has 366 days, so the same calendar date sits one day further into the year than it would otherwise. The calculator states whether the current year is a leap year so the total is never a mystery.
Working days vs Calendar days
The weekday count above excludes Saturdays and Sundays from the days remaining. It does not account for public holidays, which vary by country and sometimes by region.
For a count that handles holidays, or for any range other than the rest of the year, use the business days calculator.
Months and quarters
The rows beneath the main figures give the days left in the current month and the current quarter. Quarters run January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December — calendar quarters, not a company’s financial year, which may start in a different month.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are left in the year?
The figure at the top of this page shows the number of days from tomorrow through 31 December, using your device's local date. It updates automatically — including if you leave the page open overnight.
Does today count as a day remaining?
No. The count starts from tomorrow, so on 31 December it reads 0 rather than 1. If you prefer to count today, add one to the figure shown.
How many days are in a leap year?
366, with 29 February added. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years, which must also be divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year and 1900 was not. The calculator says which kind the current year is.
Are public holidays excluded from the weekday count?
No. The weekday count excludes Saturdays and Sundays, but it does not remove public holidays.
